Spectricity Deploys Proprietary Technology at X-FAB to Bring Spectral Imaging to Mobile Devices

Enabling integration of small, pixelated spectral filters on CMOS image sensors

X-FAB Silicon Foundries SE, the leading analog/mixed-signal and specialty foundry, and Spectricity, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in the development of multispectral imaging technology have collaborated on a unique imaging solution. Proprietary spectral imaging technology from Spectricity has been installed at X-FAB’s high-volume manufacturing facilities. This will, for the first time, enable low-cost manufacturing of spectral image sensors for use in mobile devices.

Spectricity’s patented spectral sensor solution is based on the integration of small, pixelated spectral filters onto CMOS image sensors in the visible and NIR spectral range. Inclusion of 16 or more high-quality narrowband channels is possible. Through its deployment, X-FAB is the only foundry enabling volume CMOS production of such small spectral pixels, making it and Spectricity well positioned to meet the demands of the mobile handset OEMs. The compactness and high spectral density of the resulting solution provides both high spatial- and spectral resolution sensing – allowing opportunities in smartphone, IoT, healthcare and wearables to be addressed.

Incorporation of spectral camera modules into mobile devices is part of an ongoing trend to add advanced sensing functionality. Spectral imagers will be able to capture image data across many spectral channels, beyond the conventional red, green and blue color channels. This will allow measuring of objects’ spectral signatures. Among the applications that will benefit are image acquisition where more accurate auto white balancing is needed, personalized cosmetics and skincare, remote healthcare, and smart gardening/agriculture.

Sr. Computer Vision & AI Engineer

Your main responsibilities will be to
– Develop spectral imaging processing algorithms and calibration techniques to output correct spectral image data from our cameras in volumes
– Support the engineering team to optimize the camera products and production test based on the spectral algorithm requirements
– Together with the application team, develop targeted spectral imaging applications extracting spectral features leaning on computer vision and machine learning modeling
– Co-define and execute the company roadmap

Your profile, skills and talents

Ideally you are a creative, self-dependent engineer or scientist, highly-motivated to be part of a dynamic team creating new value, continuously and actively seeking better solutions for our problems. Specifically:

– You have a master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering or similar relevant degree by proven experience and at least 5-10 years of experience in a computer vision and image processing.
– Signal processing and computer vision are your trade. You are comfortable at all levels of abstraction, from architecture to implementation of algorithm code. You are on top of quality standards with respect to software implementation and verification
– You have proven experience in applied Machine Learning and development of AI-based solutions.
– You are proficient with Python. Git and continuous integration and unit tests are the tools you use daily
– Experience with spectroscopic analysis is a very strong plus

Senior System Engineer

Your main responsibilities will be 

  • Understand the end product use case in the customer’s system
    • Understand the target system components and interfaces
    •  Understand the customer needs to easy design in of our products
    •  Understand the eco-system of the application
  •  Translate this information into product requirements to meet the customer needs
  •  Architect and simulate the optical-electrical system in its various components (lens, filters, sensor).
  •  Implement the chosen solution:
    • Design (Define DOE when needed) & tape-out
    • Results analysis and debugging
    • Fine tune for manufacturing
  • Interface to internal and external customers to align needs and development specifications
  • Give inputs to the technical roadmap to define future products
  • Hands-on system modelling and simulations.

In your role, you

  • Are part of the Engineering team, focusing on product architecture and development execution of the product in its different components, reporting to VP Engineering.

Your profile, skills and talents

Ideally you are creative and self-dependent, highly-motivated to be part of a dynamic team creating new value, continuously and actively seeking better solutions for our problems. Specifically:

  • You have a master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering or similar relevant degree by proven experience and at least 5-10 years of experience in AI.
  • AI is your trade. You have many years of proven industrial experience in proposing and developing neural network architectures for real world applications. You have a deep understanding of the architectures and their merits and issues, beyond simple use of neural nets.
  • You are able to propose and develop training routines and merit functions, understand requirements on generating the appropriate large training datasets, and you have a critical mindset to analyze results and iterate forward.
  • You are proficient with Python, Keras, Tensorflow, and preferably also with Pytorch, VertexAI and GCP. Git and continuous integration and unit tests are the tools you use daily.
  • Experience with embedded implementations on hardware and edge compute is a strong plus.
  • Experience with computer vision and/or spectroscopy is a plus.
